You will need to write, post, and print this
seminar paper, then bring it to class on Thursday for use in our
seminar. The paper will be short, with only two paragraphs in it.
The whole paper must be no more than 1.5 -- one and one-half, max--
pages long. (It is sometimes difficult to keep a paper under that
length, but that is the assignment; future papers will be penalized
if they exceed the assigned length, so you'll want to practice brevity
in this paper.)
For the first paragraph in your paper
pick just one idea that was interesting to you in the assigned Mill
reading.
a) Express what that
idea is in
your own words; b) quote two short passages from Mill in which he
expresses that idea; and c) explain briefly (and separately) what
you understand each
of those two quotes to mean. The idea you pick could be an idea you
like, or
one you
dislike,
or one you have questions about, or one that stimulated your thinking,
or... etc.
For the second paragraph in your paper
pick just one idea that was interesting to you in the assigned Kant
reading.
a) Express what that idea is in your own words; b) quote two short passages
from Kant in which he expresses that idea; and c) explain briefly (and
separately) what you understand each of those two quotes to mean. The idea
you pick could be an idea you like, or one you dislike, or one you have
questions about, or one that stimulated your thinking, or... etc
Post the paper into the folder for your seminar
(in FirstClass) before class on Thursday evening. Then
also print the paper and bring it to your
Thursday evening seminar.
These seminar papers can then serve as stimuli or beginning points
for your seminar discussion. (Papers must be typed, not handwritten.)
