Writing assignment

for Monday at midnight

This assignment asks you to examine two works (a choice of Mill or Kant and Miss Evers' Boys), come up with a thesis and prove it using specific quotes from the texts. You must find a position which you state as a thesis in your opening paragraph. Your additional paragraphs must support the position you take by explaining and quoting from the texts you choose. Be sure to quote correctly and use citation form.

The assignment is as follows:

In scene 5 ( 39) Miss Evers finds out that there is no more money for treatment; and later she says to Brodus, "...I promised the men treatment. Now we just going to let 'em go? Just leave them with nothing?"(3). It is at that point the study is named the "Tuskegee Study of Untreated Syphilis in the Negro Male." She then agrees to help with the spinal taps and continue while "misleading" the patients.

Using either Mill or Kant, make a case for or against the morality of Miss Evers' decision to continue participating in the Tuskegee Study.

Be sure to:

1. come to a decision as the which author, Kant or Mill, you will use for the basis of your point of view;

2. state the position that you will prove - Mill or Kant and the judgment you believe is valid citing either of these arbiters (this would be your thesis); and

3. explain the stance you believe Mill or Kant would take on this question and defend that judgment using quotes (and citations) from Mill or Kant and Feldshuh to do so. You may do this in a well developed short essay from one to three paragraphs long.

Please limit this paper to no more than 400 words.
